Here\u2019s What To Do"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt about it, pitbull puppies are adorable, lovable, maybe some are lickers, and most are definitely chewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Chewing is a normal puppy behavior, but if all of your shoes are developing holes that shouldn\u2019t be there and your area rug is gaining some extra tassels, it\u2019s time to do something about your pitbull puppy\u2019s destructive chewing behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Puppies chew to relieve discomfort from teething, explore their world, and decrease boredom. If your pitbull puppy\u2019s chewing has become focused on inappropriate objects you can try offering suitable chew toys, give them plenty of exercise and attention, or interrupt the chewing and divert their attention elsewhere, to name a few suggestions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do Puppies Chew So Much?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no single reason why puppies chew on everything around them. It may be a combination of many things, or different reasons at different times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To fully understand what makes your puppy chew, let\u2019s look at some possible causes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Teething<\/strong>: Just like humans, puppies get two sets of teeth, their deciduous (baby teeth) and their permanent adult teeth. The baby teeth come in by about four weeks of age, meaning that for most new puppy parents, your furry bundle comes pre-equipped with those sharp little needles that can quickly become destructive if they\u2019re not properly trained.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/health\/timeline-of-puppy-teething\/\" target=\"_blank\">teething timeline<\/a> is different for every puppy, but most baby teeth will start to be replaced by adult teeth starting at around three to four months of age and usually completing by the time your pup is six months old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That gives them two to three months of swollen, uncomfortable gums, freshly erupted yet still sore pearly whites, and lots of chewing and drooling in an effort to control and help it all along. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of chewing on things, especially firm objects, helps to massage those sore gums and encourage those new teeth to break through the gumline as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also during this teething time, you may find those teeny tiny baby teeth in your puppy\u2019s food or water bowl, or notice small blood spots there or on things they have been chewing. It\u2019s all part of the process, so no need to be alarmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Exploration<\/strong>: Just like human babies, puppies explore their world using all of their senses, taste included. Since everything is new and interesting to them, they want to learn all that they can. Chewing things may be their way of checking out their surroundings, learning that this thing tastes good and that thing tastes bad, or that this thing is squishy and makes a fun noise and that thing turns into easily swallowed \u201ctreats.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Boredom<\/strong>: Pitbull puppies are busy! If they aren\u2019t provided with enough entertainment or stimulation, they may turn their attention to chewing as a way to pass the hours and give them something to do. Chewing also releases endorphins, giving puppies that \u2018runner\u2019s high\u2019, making them feel good and want to keep doing it.<\/li><li><strong>Anxiety<\/strong>: While destructive chewing relating to anxiety is generally an adult dog problem, anxiety can develop at a very young age. Similar to a human that bites their fingernails, your puppy may be chewing because they are nervous or stressed about something. You may notice this type if chewing behavior happens more often when you\u2019re away, when the neighbor dog is barking, or when your cat is on the prowl- anything that may be stressful or nerve-wracking for a pup.<\/li><li><strong>Hunger<\/strong>: Yes, some pups may chew because they are hungry. Puppies grow fast and burn a lot of energy. If the right amount of calories aren\u2019t being given to cover all of that, puppies may chew as a way of getting more into their tummies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Long Will a Puppy\u2019s Chewing Last?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The length of time that your pitbull puppy seems like they are a set of teeth with legs will depend on the reason they are chewing in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If their chewing is due to teething, it could last three to four months. Rather, it\u2019s about turning it into an appropriate behavior. Puppies need to chew for many reasons, as we already discussed. With the exception of out of hunger, boredom, and anxiety, chewing is a completely normal puppy behavior. It\u2019s something that helps them develop and learn. With that in mind, let\u2019s look at some ways to protect your possessions from those puppy teeth while still allowing them to chew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Provide Proper Chew Toys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pitbulltribe.com\/chew-toys-puppy\/\">Chew toys for pit bull puppies<\/a> will help satisfy that chewing desire while massaging sore, teething gums, and giving them something to do. Make sure you\u2019re giving your pup plenty of time to stretch their legs and expand their minds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go for walks, play games, teach them tricks, and just spend time with them. The more time and energy they put into these positive things, the less time they\u2019ll have to shred the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With puppies, it\u2019s best to break exercise sessions into short, more frequent periods, if you can. Maybe go for a walk in the morning, play fetch before lunch, do some training after naps, and then another walk before bed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will give them some variety, plenty of time for rest and help keep their attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interrupt and divert<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you catch your pitbull pup chewing on something they shouldn\u2019t, interrupt the behavior by taking the object away and then diverting their attention to something else. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may be a proper chew toy or an activity to help them forget what they were doing when you interrupted them. Don\u2019t punish or scold them for chewing on the wrong thing, but do reward them for turning their attention on something more positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clean up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible, pick up things that you would rather not have in the mouth of your pitbull puppy. For example, no shoe shaped chew toys or old socks if you don\u2019t want them raiding your closet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For anxiety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your puppy is chewing out of nervousness or anxiety, you may try leaving them a something with your scent. Rub their chew toys in your hands or lay on their bed. That way they can have some of the comfort of you with them while you\u2019re gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some anxious dogs respond well to white noise, such as a radio or fan. Others may do better in a small, dark hidey-hole type space. Talk with your veterinarian for more coping mechanisms if your dog is experiencing extreme anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chewing is as normal a puppy behavior as is snuggling and licking your face.
